Our hair plays an important role in building our self-image. People suffering through hair loss are often victims of depression, Embarrassment and low self-esteem.
People who are not able to bear cost of expensive surgeries or the ones whom doctors have informed that the drugs wont work on their hair condition usually loose hope that they will ever have a full growth of hair again. Following is a list of all the different hairpieces, which are temporary methods of giving personal satisfaction to all such disheartened individuals:
Wigs
Hair wig is one of the oldest and easiest method for masking baldness and hair loss. Compared to old wigs the new ones come permed, dyed and brushed and give a much more natural look to a person’s appearance. With the change in the style and quality of the hair systems the price of these wigs have also risen making them more expensive. Made up of high class synthetic fibres like acrylic or real hair the wigs can be cut and shaped according to a person’s own desire and therefore requires a lot of attention to keep them in perfect condition.
Earlier in order to attach the wig to the scalp a tape or glue was used but this was a bit risky as they may easily come out in front of anybody. To solve this problem a new method has been developed through which these wigs are surgically stitched to the scalp with the help of actual wire loops. This method although safe give rise to serious infection and issues related to cleanliness. Also if a person wears a wig for a long period of time in the sun then the colour of the wig starts changing making it different from the wearer’s original hair.
Toupees
Toupees are useful for covering partial baldness but there are a number of problems associated with them. Displacement is the main problem with the toupees because as they are used for covering a small area on the scalp it sometimes gets very difficult to match them with rest of the natural hair. Secondly there are many fitting and cleanliness related issues as well. Also people face problems in swimming and taking bath while wearing toupees because water affects the colour and style of the toupees whereas the Soap and chlorine shortens the life span of a toupee.
Hair Weaving
Hair weaving is a technique through which the hairs left on the head are knotted or weaved together. This method although seems simple but often give rise to permanent hair loss due to frequent retying or tightening of the hair. Hair weaving is usually done once a month and can be very expensive if weaves are re-tightened again and again.
Artificial Hair Implants
Hair implants are synthetic strands, which are inserted into the living tissue of the scalp. The scalp is anaesthetized for this purpose and strands are inserted one by one with the help of a needle. Approximately 500 strands can be implanted in one hour if the procedure is performed at a reasonable pace but since the rejection rate is high the rejected ones need to be replaced again. This is a very painful procedure, which sometimes give rise to serious infection, scarring and often leaves thinning patches on the scalp. Also this treatment is very expensive.
Hair Extensions
Hair extensions are more suitable for women compared to men and are performed by adding hair to your existing hair. Like toupees this is also suitable for covering hair loss in a limited area and are attached with the help of special glue. Besides adding hair to existing hair they can also be glued to your scalp to fill the area of the scalp where there is no hair. This although looks good but is not a permanent solution as they need to be retightened on a regular basis.
Artificial Hair Thickeners
To give a thickening look to your thinning hair, a polish mixed with a fine powder is applied to the hair. This mixture works by hiding the thinning areas on the scalp by making your hair look thick and healthy. The effect of this mixture usually stays in your hair until you wash your hair. Applying hair thickeners directly to the scalp can be very dangerous.
Besides medications and surgeries there are number of other methods also available to cover your scalp and hide your hair loss condition from the world but each of these have a number of disadvantages of their own. Depending on the individual hair loss condition not all methods would be suitable for everyone and what suits to one patient might not work for the other one. Therefore it is better to visit a hair replacement center before start using any of these techniques. These centers after looking your hair loss condition will give you a solution that best meets the size of your head and face and also gives you a more natural look.
