Hair Transplantation

The term hair transplantation refers to transference of skin containing hair follicles from one part of the body (donor site) to bald part (recipient site). Hair transplantation is mainly used for treating male pattern baldness. In certain cases, when scalp hair follicles becomes dead due to genetic factor, hair follicles are grafted from any part (genetically resistant) of the body to the balding area (genetically affected) of the scalp.



When you visit dermatologist, they analyzes your scalp and discuss the expectations of the result. Prior to surgery, your doctor will advise you to stop certain medications and alcohol that may result in bleeding during hair transplantation. They may administer pre-operative antibiotics to prevent skin infection. Hair transplantation had been very expensive for several years after its emergence. Today, it has becomes comparatively less expensive and price usually range from $3.00 to $7.00 per graft that becomes $6000 to $15,000 for a full surgical session.

Surgical Procedure
Typically the whole procedure of hair transplantation lasts about 4 hours. The surgeon recommends the patient to take mild sedative orally. Prior to the operation, the scalp is shampooed and then treated with antibacterial agents to prevent any infection after the surgery. Topical anesthesia is also injected to reduce the pain sensitivity.

Now the surgeon harvests a strip of skin from the donor area of the scalp closing the resultant wounds. The assistants with the surgeon dissect individual follicles from the strip. They use high magnifying microscopes to carefully remove fatty tissues and fibrous from the follicle unite.

While assistances are dissecting the follicles, the surgeon punctures the recipient site with fine needle to fix the hair follicles being separated from the skin strip. After it, the assistances insert individual follicle grafts to the punctured area.

Post-operative care
Semi-permeable dressings after hair transplantation allow seepage of the blood and tissue fluid. Such dressings can be changed daily for few days. The recipient area should be exposed to sun. Most surgeons advise shampooing the scalp after two days of surgery because it prevents the formation of scabs on the scalp that may damage newly transferred hair follicles.

Hair shafts of the recently transplanted hair follicles fall out during the first 10 days. After two to three months, these transplanted hair follicles begin to produce new hair shafts that gradually grow thickening the hair density on the scalp in around 8 to 9 months period.

Special Precautions:

• Do not use any hair shampoo without prior consultation to your surgeon
• Avoid direct exposure to sun
• Don to scratch the scalp even if you experience itching
• Use only prescribed detanglers
• Avoid taking alcohol, antipsychotic and other medications without permission to the health care professional

Disadvantages Hair Transplantation
According to research, DHT and genetic factors are the fundamental culprits of hair loss. Excessive DHT and autoimmune disorder deteriorates the hair follicles of certain areas of the scalp. Even after the surgery, you may lose hair again after few months to years as hair follicles are vulnerable to damage of DHT and autoimmune disorder. You must take DHT inhibitors the entire life in case, it is the cause. If it is caused due to autoimmune disorder, there is no solution except strengthening the immune system and using corticosteroids but this does not guarantee the prevention of hair loss even after hair transplantation.
