What is Hair Loss?

The state of lacking hair partially or completely on the scalp is termed as hair loss. While the term receding hair line is most common for partial hair loss from any region of the scalp. The complete loss of hair from the scalp is called baldness. The term Alopecia areata refers to some of the total hair loss on the scalp, white alopecia totalis refers to hair loss of entire scalp and Alopecia universalis refers to hair loss of the entire body (body and scalp).

Hair loss is of two types:

  • Persistent Hair Loss

  • Temporary Hair Loss

Persistent hair loss is severe form of hair loss than temporary hair loss. Persistent hair loss is often caused by genetic factors and chronic hormonal disorders. I will discuss about causes of persistent hair loss and temporary hair loss in more details in next lessons. For now, it is necessary to now that, temporary hair loss can be treated successfully by various means and it is totally curable unlike persistent hair loss. However, persistent hair loss in some cases, may also be treated successfully. Temporary hair loss is often caused by lack of nutrients and timely hormonal fluctuations.

Summarizing all our discussion, hair loss is a lack of hair on scalp. If hair are thinning in the scalp, it is called alopecia areata, in case of complete hair loss, it is called alopecia totalis and in case of hair loss of entire body, it is called alopecia universalis. Persistent hair loss are severe than temporary hair loss. Both types of hair loss can be successfully treated, though treating persistent hair loss is a little difficult.
